Mentoring Program

ACR's Mentoring Program Needs You!

As you may recall from our membership application, ACR-Chicago's Mentoring Committee sponsors an informal, voluntary mentoring program. The goal of the program is to enable less-experienced chapter members to learn from experienced dispute resolution professionals about such things as training programs, opportunities in the field of ADR, or how best to mediate or arbitrate a given dispute.

Each year the Mentoring Committee receives many requests to participate in our program. We always need experienced members to step forward and volunteer to speak to participants either individually or in small group settings. This is an opportunity to help those who aspire to join our field, to play a role in shaping their effectiveness, and to serve our organization and our profession.

Volunteering does not have to involve many hours or a long-term commitment. Many participants are looking only for an experienced ACR-Chicago member who can meet with them once to provide some initial guidance and perhaps be available for some follow-up phone calls as issues arise. We will work with you to accommodate any time constraints or practice limitations. For example, if a participant wishes to observe a session and you are unable to bring an outsider to a professional or volunteer mediation or arbitration, you can still serve as a "resource person" for him or her and we will try to make arrangements for them to observe someone else's mediation or arbitration. Conversely, if you do not have the time to advise a participant, but would be willing to have someone observe one mediation or arbitration, you can make a valuable contribution to our program as well. If you are willing to address a small group for an hour or two, we will organize a gathering of participants who are interested in your particular area of expertise.

Whether you have one hour or ten hours of time to give to our mentoring program, we can find a participant who can benefit from your gift of time and experience. If you are willing to help, contact James Sullivan at Lawofc9191@aol.com.
